Sectors and Waters of the FIPS-Mouche European Fly Fishing Championship 2025

FIPS-Mouche championships must provide five different scoring sessions. Competitors will fish across five unique sectors. For the 29th FIPS-MOUCHE European Fly Fishing Championship, four sessions will be held on rivers. The remaining session will be held on a lake. Competitors will fish an equal number of sessions on each type of water.

The Challenging River Sectors (Bank Fishing Allowed)

The river sectors require bank fishing, but wading is allowed. Competitors may wear chest waders. River beats are approximately 150 meters in length. There are no buffer zones required between adjacent beats in the river sectors. Fishing hours for all river sectors are set from 10:00 to 13:00.

The four river competition sectors are:

  • Sector II: Adda Sondalo: Located in Alta Valtellina at 940 m above sea level. These are clear, fast-flowing alpine waters. Eligible fish include Brown trout, Marbled trout, and sporadic Rainbow trout.
  • Sector III: Mallero Chiesa: This mountain watercourse is technical and challenging (1,000 m asl). It features large boulders, deep gorges, and fast sections. Eligible fish are marbled trout, brown trout, hybrids, and rainbows.
  • Sector IV: Adda Morbegno: This stretch near Paniga (250 m asl) is diverse. It moves from slow-moving currents to more torrential areas. Brown trout, marble trout, and grayling are well distributed here. Large lake trout may be encountered during their upstream spawning runs.
  • Sector V: Mera Chiavenna: The Prosto section (300 m asl) offers torrential stretches, rapids, and deep holes. Fish here are cautious and selective. This sector rewards precision and patience.

Lake Sector I: High Altitude Bank Fishing

Sector I utilizes Palù Lake, which is located in Valmalenco. This is a high-altitude alpine lake (1,965 m above sea level). Eligible fish species include Brown trout and Arctic char.

This session is strictly bank fishing. Wading is not allowed in this lake session. Beats on the lake average 50 meters. A 3-meter buffer zone must be marked between these beats. The lake fishing hours are from 09:00 to 12:45. The session includes four rotations, with competitors fishing four beats. There is a 15-minute rotation time between these sessions.

Rules and Scoring for the 29th FIPS-MOUCHE European Fly Fishing Championship

All FIPS-Mouche authorized championships are conducted according to the Competition Rules. For the Sondrio event, these rules are supplemented by specific Rule Modifications.

Scoring and Eligible Fish

Only Salmonidae species are eligible to be scored. For a fish to count, it must meet the minimum required size of 20 cm. Measurement is taken from the tip of the nose to the extremities of the tail, squeezed together.

Scoring is weighted to reward both quantity and size:

  1. 100 points are awarded for each eligible fish caught.
  2. 20 points per centimeter of the fish’s total length are also awarded.

The scoring system used must be defined in the Rule Modifications. A competitor must score their catch using a net. The fish and net must be in the water at the point of netting. The competitor must initial their scorecard after every catch. They must sign the score card at the end of the session to confirm its accuracy.

Mandatory Equipment Standards

The FIPS-Mouche rules strictly regulate equipment.

  • Rods: Fly rods must be between seven feet six inches (229 cm) and twelve feet (366 cm) in length.
  • Lines: Fly lines must be factory-made and cannot be lead core lines. The minimum coated diameter required is 0.55 mm (0.22”).
  • Flies/Hooks: All flies must be dressed on barbless single hooks.
  • Nets: The mesh material of the landing net must be rubber, silicon, or a soft synthetic material. Generally, nets must not exceed 122 cm (48 inches) in overall length. However, for Palù Lake (Sector I), landing nets may extend up to 2.5 meters.

Practicing before the championship must follow specific rules. All pre-championship practice must be catch and release. Only barbless hooks may be used during practice. Furthermore, wearing wading boots and wet waders is prohibited in championship hotels.

Participation and Logistics for the Sondrio 2025 Fly Fishing Event

The 29th FIPS-MOUCHE European FLY FISHING CHAMPIONSHIP has confirmed registrations from 16 nations. Teams participating represent countries like Italy, Ireland, France, Spain, and England. Each team is comprised of five competitors. Teams may also include an optional Reserve, a Team Captain, or a Manager.

The International Organizer (IO) responsible for managing the competition is Mr. Renato Manenti. He is the President of Unione Pesca Sondrio (UPS). The host organization must publish competition sector boundaries on the event website. This must be done at least 30 days before the official start of the event.

Nedžad Coha Nadarević on river Sanica

Hi There!

My name is Nedžad Nadarević, though my friends know me as Coha. I’m a family man first, with a loving wife and two amazing children. My weekdays are spent in the structured world of IT administration in a court and SEO optimization, but my soul truly comes alive on the water. I am completely obsessed with fly fishing and the intricate art of fly tying.
